Attendance is a data problem, not a discipline problem
Ask a principal about attendance and you will hear about parents, transport and February weddings. Ask the office and you will hear something more useful: they find out about the absence too late to do anything with it.

The latency, not the number
A mark made at 9:10am and keyed in at 4pm is a record. The same mark visible at 9:15am is an intervention — a message home before lunch, a call from the class teacher, a pattern flagged in week two rather than at term end.
Every improvement in attendance we have watched came from closing that gap, not from tightening the policy. The policy was already tight. The information was late.
Period-wise or day-wise, but decide
Day-wise attendance is cheap and answers whether a child came to school. Period-wise is expensive and answers whether a child attended chemistry. Both are legitimate; running both badly is not.
Our rule of thumb: day-wise for primary, period-wise from the year the timetable starts fragmenting and subject teachers outnumber class teachers. Anything else and you are asking teachers to mark twice for a report nobody reads.
Biometrics solve staff attendance, not student attendance
A fingerprint device at the gate tells you who entered the campus. It does not tell you who was in the third period, which is the number that matters academically and the one an inspection asks for.
Where devices earn their place is staff attendance, where entry time genuinely is the measurement and where it feeds payroll directly. For students, the classroom mark remains the source of truth — the gate reading is corroboration.
- Gate or device data: staff hours, payroll inputs, visitor and transport logs.
- Classroom marks: student attendance percentage, eligibility, parent notification.
- Reconcile the two rather than choosing one.
Make the exception cheap
Most attendance systems are excellent at recording present and absent, and hopeless at the rest: on duty for a sports meet, medically excused with a certificate, late with permission, absent but marked after a correction request from a parent.
Those exceptions are a small share of marks and the entire share of disputes. Systems that model them as first-class states — with who approved and when — end the argument. Systems that force a teacher to choose between two buttons produce a WhatsApp thread instead.
